Transitions & Toilet Training
Transitions
Starting in a new facility is challenging for children and parents. To help this transition:
- Schedule a time to visit the classroom, with the child, before the official start date.
- Understand that the child may cry for several weeks at drop-off.
- Remember that changes in the classroom or home environment create a transition process.
- Please discuss concerns regarding the transition with Manhattan Day Care staff.
Toddler to Preschool Transition
All children enrolled in our toddler room must transition to the preschool room at 2½ years of age.
- Eight weeks prior to the transition Manhattan Day Care staff will discuss the transition process.
- Six weeks prior to the transition date, a parent meeting will be held to discuss the transition process. Discussion will include classroom options, length of transition, and questions or concerns. Please visit the classroom to provide the Program Director with the decision. Each child is different and accommodations can be made.
- Please discuss concerns regarding the transition with Manhattan Day Care staff.
Toilet Training
Please be aware that toilet training can be very difficult for children. We understand that children are not developmentally ready to be toilet-trained until the age of 2½ or three years of age.
- Adjustment time from enrollment to toilet-training will be given.
- Our goal is for each child to be toilet-trained before transitioning into the preschool classroom.
- Please discuss with teachers the methods and terminology that is used at home.
- If the child is not toilet trained by preschool room transition please switch to pull-ups. Then the parents and teachers will decide the best method to transition the child to underwear.
- Children may seem to be toilet trained but changes in the classroom or home environment will trigger a lapse.
- Please discuss any concerns with Manhattan Day Care staff.
